How To Evolve Your Career After Becoming Redundant

In this changing economic climate, we may be faced with options that previously we did not entertain. In life there are always surprises and it is how we navigate through these turbulent times that we can get clearer on our purpose and our chosen career. If your position is being made redundant, then see this as a window of opportunity. Here are some tips to get you thinking about your options.

  1. Going back to your old company as a consultant

Sometimes there is an option to continue working in the same company as a consultant. Naturally you are keen to go back and work under these new conditions. Ensure you are charging appropriately as now you have to manage your own insurances and superannuation.

You can make more money this way as it gives you the flexibility to charge more per hour for your specialized skills. In addition you can find other contracts with other companies if you so wish as you are not tied to your previous employer. You are leveraging of your time to improve your financial situation, thus benefiting your family and your career. See this option as positive as you become the creator of your day.

  1. Starting a new small business

Remember it is your job role that has become redundant not you. This can be a perfect opportunity to reassess your values and your career direction and go down the path of self employment and becoming a small business owner. Some people get caught up with the security of each pay cheque and they do not follow other creative pursuits. Again see this option as a new opportunity to follow your passions and becoming your own boss. Leverage your skills that you have acquired and have them work for you.

Small business owners do tend to work longer hours as they are at the helm of their business yet once you have it floating in the positive there are so many benefits. Flexibility to work around family especially if you have young children, networking with other business owners, whilst creating your freedom. Also remember that many people starting their own business don’t have the advantage of having a redundancy package helping them through the first months. Your sense of happiness increases too as you are making each day count consciously and knowing that you are the brand and the decision-maker.

  1. Pursuing education

This could be a great time to pursue another career and re-train. There are many adult education centers and it is never too late to pursue a university education. This will add to your resume and you are doing something you are in alignment with.

  1. Going on a sabbatical

Taking a career break for a couple of months could be what you need right now. Your company may offer an unpaid sabbatical which means that your job will be there when you get back. Often people travel, do volunteer work and/or gain new skills. This is a perfect time to reassess what you really want in your career.

  1. Seek financial advice

Having being paid a lump sum for redundancy you may want to consult a financial advisor to give you an idea of your choices. This will help you get a clearer picture of what you want to do next, as we all carry responsibilities and obligations.

  1. Career advice

If you have felt that this job was not your ideal job, then speaking to a career advisor will definitely give you perspective and clarity. You may want to get some aptitude tests done to assess your strengths and what industries suit you. The best way to do this is with a life coach which you can find here coachinginst.com/find/.

This is the ideal time to focus on you whilst re-inventing yourself with respect to your career. Be passionate about your new path and find new ways to discover more about yourself.
